The Best Methods for Avoiding Canker Sore Pain

Posted on 8/15/2015 by Janie Bell
A woman suffering from a canker sore.Canker sores are often mistaken for cold sores. Cold sores are found around the outside of the mouth and are contagious. They are of the Herpes virus. Canker sores are found within the mouth and are extremely painful, but are not from a virus and are not contagious. They are basically small ulcers that can make it difficult to eat or even talk. Here are a few suggestions for avoiding canker sores and the pain they cause.

Avoid Certain Foods
Spicy, acidic, or especially hard or crunchy foods are known to cause canker sores and do not feel good when you have them. The acidity found in citrus fruits, strawberries and pineapples, or even apples are some of the most common culprits. Certain vegetables such as tomatoes are also associated with a canker sore breakout. If you like spicy food, it may be a good idea to pace yourself.

Diet Deficiencies
It could be you need to add certain foods to your diet. When a person is lacking certain vitamins and minerals, they could be more prone to developing canker sores. Make sure you are getting enough zinc, iron, folic acid and B-12.

Canker Sore Pain Management

If you can't prevent them due to such reasons as an auto-immune disease, IBS, Behcet's disease or HIV/AIDS, then the best way to avoid canker sore pain is to follow these suggestions:

•  Over the counter or prescription topical numbing agents
•  Mouthwashes, including prescription strength with steroids and lidocaine to manage the pain
•  Supplements to increase the vitamins and minerals you may be low in
•  Anti-acid chewable tablets used for heartburn relief actually help to neutralize the area and speed the healing process
•  Vitamin E capsules can be opened and applied to the sore, as well as tea tree oil
•  Diluted hydrogen peroxide with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda helps fight harmful bacteria
•  Eat yogurt with live cultures

If your canker sores continue to get worse or do not go away within a week, two at most, please contact us or physician. There may be an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.
