|You know you should brush your teeth twice a day, but did you know that you should brush them upon waking and then again before going to bed? Of course, the ideal time to brush your teeth is after every time that you eat, but being realistic, we know that is not a possibility for everyone. For that reason, we think it is important to brush in the morning and again at night for the best benefits on your oral health.
Get Rid of Morning BreathWho likes morning breath? The best way to get rid of it is to brush your teeth right away when you wake up rather than waiting until after you eat breakfast, especially if that is going to be a few hours away. But the real reason to brush your teeth right away in the morning is to rid your mouth of the bacteria that accumulated over night. Just like everything else in your body, your saliva production slows down while you sleep.
This means that bacteria has a chance to multiply and eat away at the enamel of your teeth. The sooner you brush your teeth in the morning, the sooner you can get rid of it. You would be amazed at how fast your enamel can demineralize as a result of accumulated bacteria - why take the chance when you can brush your teeth right away and get that saliva production going again?
Get Rid of the Daytime Germs
Brushing your teeth at night is like giving your mouth a clean slate after a long day of germs. Think back to all of the food you ate and the drinks you consumed. You put a lot of sugar, bacteria and food debris in your mouth. If that food is left to sit there, it is going to turn into bacteria which will eat away at your enamel.
This is one of the most important times to clean your teeth. This means not only brushing every tooth in your mouth, but also flossing in between each tooth. You need to get the food debris out, especially in between your teeth. As a regular habit, try flossing first and then brushing your teeth afterwards. This is a great way to give your mouth a fresh start before going to bed and decreasing the risk of decay or gum disease forming while you sleep.
Remember that the technique you use when you brush your teeth as well as the length of time that you brush is important as well. If you rush through the process it is not going to do your mouth any good. You should be taking at least two minutes every time you brush your teeth. At night, when you floss too, it will take a few more minutes, but think of the benefits you are providing your mouth and even your physical health.
If you do not floss, you are putting yourself at risk for tartar buildup which leads to gum disease, which can lead to heart disease. Is this a risk you want to take? Instead of taking the risk, take the five minutes a night that it takes to care for your teeth and give yourself the benefit of optimal oral and physical health.
