Scaling and root planing is used for a variety of reasons, some are preventative and others are used as a source of treatment. If you are recommended to undergo this procedure, know that it is a completely normal procedure that we perform on a daily basis. Scaling and root planing is an effective way to give your teeth and gum line the deep cleaning that they need to remove all plaque and bacteria from your mouth. This will help keep you teeth healthy in the long run. The reasons for this procedure include preventing or treating periodontal disease, prevent tooth loss, and provide a pleasing smile. Periodontal DiseaseWhen gum disease becomes advanced, periodontal disease begins. This disease is not reversible and can put you at risk for a variety of serious issues, including heart disease. This disease begins to affect the pockets in your gum line as well as the underlying bone. Scaling and root planing is the only way to remove the plaque and bacteria that has grown beneath the gum line. The scaling portion of the procedure is similar to what you would receive during a standard dental cleaning - we will remove the plaque on the exterior of your teeth. The planing portion of the procedure involves going beneath the gum line and removing infected material that has accumulated as well as smoothing out the roots. When this occurs, the periodontal disease can be minimized and as long as proper future oral hygiene and regular appointments occur, the periodontal disease could remain at bay.Prevent Tooth LossWhen periodontal disease hits its worst stages, your teeth are at risk for being completely lost. As the pockets get deeper within your gum line, more bacteria accumulates in there. As this occurs, your body reacts negatively, which causes the jaw bone to weaken. This could eventually cause tooth loss, which is obviously something you want to avoid. With scaling and root planing, we are able to get beneath the gum line and remove the offending bacteria that has accumulated in the pockets, minimizing the risk of tooth loss.Fix your SmileAre you embarrassed to smile because your teeth are less than pleasant to look at? Scaling and root planing can help! This deep cleaning helps to give you the whitest, brightest smile by completely removing all bacteria and plaque from the surface of your enamel as well as below the gum line. Scaling and root planing is not extremely invasive, yet provides you with amazing results when it is complete.Scaling and root planing is a very common procedure that can have great results. We provide this service often in our office in an attempt to fight against gum disease. Once the process is complete, it is typically necessary to come in once every 3 months rather than every 6 months in order to keep your teeth free from bacteria and subsequent plaque. After the procedure is done, we may supply you with prescription for a special mouthwash that will continue to fight bacteria harder than any mouthwash you could purchase over the counter. If you have any questions or concerns about this procedure, please feel free to ask us. We have administered this procedure many times before with great results - it is our goal to provide our patients with optimal oral health with a strong fight against the risk of gum disease as it is the leading cause of premature tooth loss and could also put you at risk for heart disease. Contact our office today to talk about your need for scaling and root planing and how it can help you. |
