Do Braces Increase Your Risk of Cavities?

Braces are a great way to get that straight, confident smile you want that is healthier, too, but if you have braces, could that leave your teeth more prone to cavities?

It is hard to get behind those brackets and wires to really brush and floss, so is that making you more susceptible to getting more cavities?

The truth is, it can, but it doesn't have to. There are ways of making sure that you are not only brushing well enough, but also flossing, to keep your teeth in tip-top shape.

Making Sure You See Your Dentist Regularly When You Have Braces

Brushing may take a bit longer when you have braces since you have to get around each bracket and around each band you have on your teeth. It is better to take a few extra minutes to brush well than to miss places and get cavities.

Flossing is also a bit more of a challenge and will take longer, but it can and should be done. What you have to do is ask your dentist or specialist about a floss threader and learn to use that to get the floss in between each tooth. This process is a bit time consuming, but not having to worry about debris between your teeth is invaluable.

While braces may make you a little more susceptible to cavities, it doesn't guarantee you will get them. If you properly care for your teeth while you have braces, and make sure you brush and floss in each of the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth, you can keep it healthy the entire time you have braces.

If you need help making sure you are keeping your teeth clean enough, contact our office. Ask about getting an extra exam and have them point out anywhere you may be missing.
